Few major treaties with India

  1. Treaty of Sugauli (1816): This treaty ended the Anglo-Nepalese War and resulted in territorial concessions by Nepal to the British, including parts of present-day Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
  2. Treaty of Peace and Friendship (1950): This treaty established the framework for bilateral relations between Nepal and India, covering various aspects of cooperation, including trade, transit rights, diplomatic relations, and the treatment of citizens of both countries.
  3. Mahakali Treaty (1996): Also known as the “Mahakali River Treaty,” it regulates the utilization of the waters of the Mahakali River and outlines provisions for the joint development of its resources and the sharing of benefits between Nepal and India.
  4. Treaty of Transit (1972): This treaty governs transit rights for Nepal through Indian territory, allowing access to Indian ports for Nepal’s foreign trade and facilitating the movement of goods to and from Nepal through Indian territory.
  5. Power Trade Agreement (2014): This agreement focuses on cooperation in the field of hydropower generation and electricity trade, promoting cross-border electricity trade, establishing grid connectivity, and facilitating the exchange of electricity between Nepal and India.
  6. Gandak Treaty (1959): Also known as the “Gandak Agreement,” it regulates the sharing of waters from the Gandak River between Nepal and India for irrigation and other purposes.
  7. Integrated Check Post Agreement (2005): This agreement pertains to the development and operation of integrated check posts along the Nepal-India border, facilitating trade and movement of goods and people between the two countries.
  8. Treaty of Trade (1991): This treaty aims to promote trade and economic cooperation between Nepal and India, providing a framework for the exchange of goods and services, tariff concessions, and measures to address trade-related issues.
  9. Treaty on the Kalapani Boundary (1965): This treaty between Nepal and India sought to resolve the border dispute concerning the Kalapani region, but the issue remains unresolved.
  10. Postal Treaty (1950): This treaty establishes the postal arrangements between Nepal and India, facilitating the exchange of mail and cooperation in postal services.
